South Korea Holds 22nd General Election

WEB South Korea Will Hold Legislative Elections on Wednesday

In London and Seoul

South Korea held its 22nd general election on April 10, with liberal opposition parties scoring a landslide victory. The People's Power Party (PPP) won 115 seats, while the Democratic Party (DP) won 103 seats. The Justice Party won 6 seats, while the Open Democratic Party won 5 seats. The election saw a record low turnout of 58.8%, down from 66.2% in the 2020 election.

The PPP's victory was seen as a rejection of the ruling DP, which has been in power since 2017. The DP has been criticized for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, and a series of corruption scandals. The PPP has promised to address these issues and to implement a more conservative agenda.

The election results are expected to have a significant impact on South Korea's domestic and foreign policy. The PPP has pledged to take a tougher stance on North Korea and to strengthen ties with the United States. The DP, on the other hand, has advocated for a more conciliatory approach towards North Korea and for closer ties with China.

The election results are also seen as a bellwether for the upcoming presidential election, which is scheduled to be held in March 2022. The PPP's victory is likely to boost the chances of its candidate, Yoon Seok-youl, who is currently the frontrunner in the polls.
