Former Associated Press Reporter Captive for Nearly Seven Years

April 21, 2024, 6:52 PM ET

Terry Anderson, a former Associated Press (AP) journalist who was held hostage by Hezbollah for nearly seven years, has died at the age of 76. Anderson passed away on April 21, 2024, according to his family.

Anderson was born on October 27, 1947, and began his career as an AP correspondent in the 1970s. In 1985, while reporting from Beirut, Lebanon, he was kidnapped by Hezbollah militants and held captive for 2,454 days.

Anderson's captivity garnered international attention, and his release in 1991 was a major diplomatic triumph. He later returned to work as a correspondent for AP, covering conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere.

Anderson's death was met with sadness from his former colleagues and friends. AP President and CEO Daisy Veerasingham said in a statement, "Terry was a courageous and dedicated journalist who made a significant contribution to our understanding of the Middle East. He will be deeply missed."
