Xabi Alonso Returns to Dublin with Bayer Leverkusen

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder now managing Bundesliga side

Alonso has overseen an extraordinary turnaround at Leverkusen since taking charge in October 2022

Born 25 November 1981, Xabi Alonso is a Spanish professional football manager and former player who played as a central midfielder. He is the current manager of Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

"In Xabi Alonso, we have signed a coach who as a player was an absolute world-class professional for many years and an intelligent strategist," said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes. "We are convinced that he will continue to develop our team and achieve success with us."

Alonso has overseen an extraordinary turnaround at Leverkusen since taking charge in October 2022. The team was struggling near the bottom of the Bundesliga table when he arrived, but they have since climbed to 10th place and are now in contention for a European place.

Leverkusen's recent form has been particularly impressive. They have won their last five matches, including a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund. This run of form has seen them extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches, which is their longest such run since 2019.

Alonso is a popular figure in the world of football. He was a key member of the Spain team that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship. He also won the UEFA Champions League twice with Real Madrid.

Alonso's return to Dublin will be a special occasion for the former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder. He played for Liverpool for five years, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005. He also played for Real Madrid for five years, winning the La Liga title twice and the UEFA Champions League once.
