Iceland Volcano Erupts: State of Emergency Declared

Fourth eruption in southern Iceland since December triggers emergency response

Lava flows, gas pollution, and easing volcanic activity raise concerns

A state of emergency has been declared in southern Iceland following the fourth volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since December. The ongoing eruption at the Sundhnúksgígaröð crater row has prompted concerns due to lava flows, gas pollution hazards, and the potential for further activity.

According to the Iceland Meteorological Office, volcanic activity near the southwestern town of Grindavik has been easing. However, aerial images show significant lava flows continuing to emit from the crater. The Lava Centre, which provides live earthquake and volcano monitoring, reports increased earthquake activity in the area.

Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors and monitor the situation. Gas pollution hazards remain a concern, with residents urged to close windows and doors and avoid exposure to volcanic fumes. The Icelandic Met Office has downgraded the eruption warning from red to orange, indicating a reduced but still ongoing threat.

This latest eruption is part of a series of seismic events that began in the area in early December. The previous three eruptions occurred on March 19th, April 5th, and May 3rd. Scientists continue to monitor the situation closely, with concerns that further eruptions could occur.
