James Mountain Inhofe (born November 17, 1934 – July 9, 2024) was an American politician who served as a United States senator from Oklahoma for nearly three decades.
Inhofe, who was elected to a fifth Senate term in 2020, stepped down in early 2023 due to health reasons. He was a staunch conservative and a vocal opponent of climate change, once famously bringing a snowball onto the Senate floor to dispute the scientific consensus on global warming.
Inhofe's death was announced by his office on Saturday. No cause of death was given, but Inhofe had been battling a long illness.
Inhofe's passing leaves a void in the Senate and in Oklahoma politics. He was a larger-than-life figure who will be remembered for his unwavering conservative principles and his dedication to his state.
