Electrify America Implements Changes to Encourage EV Etiquette and Charging Efficiency

Subsidizing the Shift to Electric Vehicles

Electrify America, one of the leading charging companies in the US, is trying to encourage drivers to get the most out of their electric vehicles (EVs) while promoting charging etiquette.

Strict Limits Enacted at Busy Charging Stations

At 10 of the busiest EV fast charging stations in California, Electrify America has enacted a strict limit. Charging will automatically stop at 85 percent, and if drivers don't unplug their EVs within 10 minutes, they will be charged an additional fee.

Combating Charge Hogging

EV charging companies are increasingly concerned about "charge hogs" - drivers who needlessly occupy the space at chargers for longer than necessary. Electrify America's new policy aims to penalize these drivers and encourage them to unplug their vehicles once they reach an appropriate charge level.

Research Highlights the Problem

Research from the US Department of Energy found that in 36 states (including Washington, D.C.), electric car drivers who exclusively use public fast chargers pay significantly more to charge their vehicles than those who charge at home. For example, the Polestar 2 would cost 132p per mile to charge at home versus 235p per mile at a public fast charger.

Benefits of the New Policy

Electrify America's new policy is expected to have several benefits: *

Increased charging station availability

*

Reduced wait times for drivers

*

Improved charging efficiency

*

Encouraged responsible charging behavior

Conclusion

Electrify America's new policy is a step in the right direction toward promoting EV etiquette and charging efficiency. By penalizing charge hogs and encouraging drivers to unplug their vehicles when they reach an appropriate charge level, Electrify America hopes to improve the overall charging experience for all EV drivers.
