A dead porbeagle shark has washed ashore on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, according to a scientist who examined the animal. The 9-foot-long shark was found near First Encounter Beach in Eastham on Thursday morning.
The shark was frozen solid when it was discovered, and it is believed to have died several days earlier. A necropsy performed by a scientist from the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries revealed that the shark had no visible injuries. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Porbeagle sharks are a species of mackerel shark that are found in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are typically found in deep water, but they can sometimes be found near shore. Porbeagle sharks are not considered to be a threat to humans, but they have been known to attack people who are spearfishing or diving.
The last time a porbeagle shark was found on Cape Cod was in 2019. That shark was also found dead, and the cause of death was never determined.
